The run in
|
Now that we're well and truly into the squeaky bum part of the season, I think it's time to discuss something we're not often involved in - the race for Europe.
Even though we only have four games left we can still finish as high as 2nd or as low as 11th. Two more points will at least guarantee us top ten though.
I'm ignoring Manchester United, as it looks like they're out of reach (for us at least) and have probably sealed 2nd.
However we can't write off Leeds (currently 11th) in the race for European football just yet, as technically they can finish as high as 5th.
So who's got what?:
3rd: Leicester with 63 points, 4 games to go and a goal difference of +22.
Games left: H Newcastle; A Man Utd; A Chelsea; H Spurs.
4th: Chelsea with 61 points, 4 games to go and a GD of +22.
Games left: A Man City; H Arsenal; H Lelcester; A Villa.
5th: WHU with 58 points, 4 games to go and a GD of +11.
Games left: H Everton; A BHA; A WBA; H Soton.
6th: Spurs with 56 points, 4 games to go and a GD of +22.
Games left: A Leeds; H Wolves; H Villa; A Leicester.
7th: Liverpool with 54 points, 5 games to go and a GD of +16.
Games left: H Soton; A Man Utd; A WBA; A Burnley; H Palace.
8th: Everton with 52 points, 5 games to go and a GD of +3.
Games left: A WHU; A Villa; H Sheff Utd; H Wolves; A Man City.
9th: Arsenal with 49 points, 4 games to go and a GD of +9.
Games left: H WBA; A Chelsea; A Palace; H BHA.
10th: Aston Villa with 48 points, 5 games to go and a GD of +10.
Games left: A Man Utd; H Everton; A Palace; A Spurs; H Chelsea.
11th: Leeds with 47 points, 4 games to go and a GD of -2.
Games left: H Spurs; A Burnley; A Soton; H WBA.
It's a bit quirky that 3 of the top 6 have an identical goal difference of +22, but ours looks a bit weak in comparison.
On the other hand I think all bar Liverpool would swap for our run in! Sadly we have two bogey teams and then Big Sam looms large, so it's a bit difficult to get too carried away.
Both Leicester and Chelsea have tough run ins, so it wouldn't be that big a surprise to see it go all the way to the final whistle.
What do you all reckon?
Whatever happens we can at least agree it's been an amazing season.

You are right. Liverpool apart we have the easiest run-in with all 4 eminently winnable if we play like we did last night.

The big games are Leicester v chelski, spurs and Utd and Chelsea vs City and arsenal.
All we can do is win our last four. If we do and we are capable of it. Holy fucking shit.

If city have the title sorted are they going to put a shift in with a champions league final to look forward to?

One positive is that by the time we play Brighton and saints they should both be mathematically safe.
West Brom should also be down.
If we beat Everton at weekend I think we will sneak into 4th as I can see both Chelsea and Leicester dropping points. Especially as they still have to play each other!

City v Chelsea is next weekend and city will win the title if they win so hopefully they will go full throttle and deprive Chelsea of 3 points.

The strange thing is I actually think we have a team with the character to give it a good go. Cant remember feeling like that in 30 years.

I've thought for a while that Liverpool would end up finishing third quite comfortably, as I expected them to click back into form at some point. They'd probably prefer a tougher set of games ironically.
We also have to still be a bit wary of Chelsea winning the Champions League and then needing to finish 3rd to qualify. Hopefully Real will see them off tomorrow.
Maybe fan unrest can play a part too - Man Utd, Arsenal and Spurs fans are all kicking off now!

With 10 games to go, we were 3 points off 4th. With injuries, running out of steam etc. thought we'd fade away.
Here we are, with 4 games left, 3 points off 4th. We are hanging on.
Think, we may just nick 4th place.

I'm pretty confident but I think the Brighton game could be the toughest of the four. They're well organised and play decent football, whatever happens Moyes is by far the manager of the year despite whatever silverware Pep picks up

Based on the way we have been playing this year and the fact that we have our best players coming back at the right time, logic says we will finish 4th. The west Han of old have been absent this year however I’m worried about Samuel, the hippo headed northern cunt

My other big worry is have we ever won 5 prem games in a row?

“We also have to still be a bit wary of Chelsea winning the Champions League and then needing to finish 3rd to qualify”
That would only be the case of Chelsea won the CL, but finished outside the top 4 AND Arsenal won the EL (and finished outside the top 4 too, but that’s a moot point).
If we finished 4th, Chelsea 5th or below, they won the CL and anyone but Arsenal won the EL then the top 4 plus Chelsea would go into the CL, the Prem would then lose one of its EL places (which could fuck Tottenham)

We won 4 in a row earlier this season (Everton, West Brom, Burnley and Palace)
